Drapodou (Literally "Flag from where ?") ?") is a simple HTML and Javascript program for the visual identification of the 194 world national flags. It uses your description of the colours of the flag, their arrangement (horizontal or vertical stripes, squares, circles etc.) and motifs (stars, plants, arms and so on) to identify the flag.
As you describe the flag using DRAPODOU's buttons the a possible recognised flag appears, with the associated country name and capital.
During your description a 3-line comments window and a flag image corresponding to your description appears to help you find the answer to your flag.
Here are some guidelines to help DRAPODOU quickly find the answer of the country whose flag you have seen (ensure that the browser window is large enough to see the whole DRAPODOU page) :

1/ Begin by describing the flag's main colours. Sometimes this is sufficient to recognise a flag, if it has a unique colour combination.

2/ Next, please give the geometrical arrangement of these main colours - horizontal and vertical stripes, circular zones, squares, diagonal stripes, and son on. Several of these shapes may coexist. There is no need to use the arrangement buttons if there is only one colour. If you make a mistake you should cancel the selection by clicking again on the same button, which will lose its highlight and remove the selection (or click the "RESET" button to start again from the beginning).

3/ Specify, if any, which motifs are visible on the flag (for complex or unrecognisable motifs, or if there is no specific button, choose "other motif"). Several motifs may be chosen, such as "stars" and "half-moon" for the Turkish and Tunisian flags, but if you make a mistake do not forget to click again to deactivate a button (or use "RESET" to start again).

4/ If there are stars or stripes then give their number using the stripes or stars number buttons on the right side of the page. For these two options the number can be changed without a reset, because only the last value chosen is used for flag recognition. For stripes please give either the number of vertical or horizontal stripes, not the total of both kinds! (for example, the flag of Benin has 1 vertical stripe and 2 horizontal stripes, the number of stripes will be 2, not 3).

5/ For striped flags the first colour can be specified, to help speed up flag recognition. The following convention is used: For horizontally stripes (for example, The Netherlands) the first colour is the one of the top stripe (red in this case). For vertically striped flags the first colour is always the one near the mast (staff) : blue in the example of the French tricolour flag.

Finally, several buttons may be selected for each category (except for the first colour and number of stars, where logically only one option may be selected out of the available choices). If you have pushed the wrong button you can simply deselect it (clicking on it again will extinguish it!)

DRAPODOU also supposes that you are logical with your inputs, and that you do not, for example, give a first colour that you have not also given in the "main colours" area. If you do then Drapodou will probably answer "unknown flag for DRAPODOU". To avoid this either correct your colour or press "RESET" and start again.

6/ If there is a CROSS or some STARS on the flag it can be helpful to specify (if known) the CENTRAL COLOUR OF THE CROSS or THE COLOUR OF THE STAR. This can distinguish between several flags, such as the flag of Cameroon (yellow star) and the Senegalese flag (red star, but the other colours are the same). Another example is the Icelandic flag (blue with a red cross) and the Norwegian flag (red with a blue cross).

Drapodou Nations v4.0 recognises 234 flags, with 194 sovereign country flags, plus 40 others for international organisations such as the UN, NATO, Red Cross, International Olympic Committee, and some others (see the details further on). A French version of DRAPODOU exists on my other Internet site www.nareva.info (Nature information & photographs), and this version can recognise the 194 national flags + 110 additional flags (certain towns and regions of France, Great Britain, Italy, Canada, Chile, USA...)

For further information you can also visit the site www.cyber-flag.net , which has more details on every country - all national anthems, the languages used, religion, currency, population, and more - a really indispensable site on the subject (but it is unable to find a country from its flag's colours, which DRAPODOU does for you!) The GIF images of most of the flags shown in DRAPODOU come from this site, thanks to its author's kind permission. These images must not be copied or used in commercial applications.

The 40 other flags (international organisations and other countries) were added to these national flags. I chose them for their choice of colours and their artistic expression (really subjective criteria!).

These additional flags are (French alphabetical order):
Aborigens, Abu Dhabi, Alaska, England, Antarctica, Red Cross, IOC (Olympic Games), Cojedes, European Council, Cornwall, Corsica, Red Crescent, Donetska, Scotland, Basque Country, Greenland, Guadeloupe, Northern Ireland, Lara, Chilean Magellan & Antarctica, Mars (the planet), Martinique, UN (United Nations), Nato, Walles, Quebec, Reunion, Sardinia, Sicily, Chechnya, Earth (our planet), Tierra del Fuego, Texas, Tibet, Tuamotus, UNESCO, USSR (1955 - 1991), Aosta Valley, Zanzibar (island of Tanzania), and Zulia.

DRAPODOU takes into account the number of colour stripes, for example :

The Dutch flag (red, white, blue in 3 horizontal stripes, first colour RED) is confused at first by the program with the Thai flag, which has the same colours, horizontal stripes, first colour also red, top to bottom red, white, blue, white, red. If you specify 5 stripes in the "Number of Stripes" area, then you (DRAPODOU) will identify the flag of Thailand.

Very similar flags might not be distinguished between (but you will be informed in the comments area):

* The Netherlands & Luxemburg (red, white, blue in 3 horizontal stripes, and first colour red). The BLUE of the Dutch flag is slightly darker than the Luxembourg one...
* Austria & Latvia (3 Horizontal stripes : red, white, red). The 3 stripes of Austria have the same width, but those of Latvia do not (red stripes wider than the central white one).
* Indonesia & Monaco (2 Horizontal Stripes: red as the first colour, then white), nearly identical.
* Denmark & Switzerland (white cross on a red background). The Danish cross is not centred (it is a Scandinavian cross), the Swiss cross is centred and is wider.

You can see the other flag of a very similar pair by selecting the button "Tool" when you have identified one of the two flags. Example: when you have found Denmark (RED, WHITE VERTICAL CROSS), if you add the "Tool" button by clicking on it you will see the Swiss flag appear. The same tool differentiates between other pairs such as The Netherlands & Luxembourg, Austria & Latvia, Indonesia & Monaco, Sweden & the French town of Toulon (blue with a yellow vertical cross), Romania & Chad (3 vertical stripes, blue, yellow, red), and England & the Red Cross (white with a red cross).
